Literacy throughout the disciplines, to include the World Language Classroom

Literacy is one of the most common terms used in our society today.  We are surrounded by literacy terms - "financial literacy," "technological literacy," "geographical literacy," to name a few.  

Lisa Dalrymple, Foreign Language Department Head for  Mt. Blue RSD, will look at the expanded definition of literacy as it applies across the content areas.  

"It is not enough to say that literacy is defined by being able to read and write.  Today our students need to be able to do an array of tasks to be literate.  Students need to be able to comprehend, identify, prioritize, organize, retrieve, and understand within a context that is meaningful.  Literacy is not confined to one area of a person's life but rather it is found in every discipline. Free websites use social networking tools to share content

With all of the increasing demands for standards based performance, schools are streamlining instructional time, focusing on what they perceive as essential.

Writing often takes a hit because it is time consuming.

 Fluency suffers.

Teachers know fluency needs to be established before writing can be crafted.

Enter - social networks for students that are protected.

Take a look at the following.  You might find a way to use them in your classrooms next year.

Literacy and the Common Core - The Role of Writing!

Recently I spoke to an assistant principal at Brockton High School.  For those of you who are familiar with ASCD, you know Brockton HS has been praised for the model it has been using over the last 11 years - assuring increased student success. 

The administration shared the following chart with me. 

Although this has been written for high school,  I suggest we all consider how it might impact other levels, K-12.

As you can see, literacy has been integrated throughout all content areas.  With the advent of common core, this format is a helpful guide.  Enjoy.

Read Aloud and Lesson for May:)

The lesson of the month is --in my opinion-- the perfect kind of lesson to be doing in the last month and a half of school: it's both fun and it teaches some useful skills.  This lesson was used as an exemplar lesson during last year's Persuasive Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop here in Nevada.  The mentor text--Steven L. Layne's My Brother Dan's Delicious-- is just a wonderful read aloud that so many teachers still don't know about; it's worth checking out, and it will inspire your kids to write to this assignment...and use voice tricks when they write!
